Below is their application:
“Red Dust Company Choir was established in 2019. We were meeting monthly at Citizens House, until the pandemic when we suspended the sessions from February 2020. Before that time, they were attended by up to 40 members, each month paying £5 to attend, which covered the choir leader fees and room hire. We have 143 people registered who’ve attended sessions with us. We’ve members with dementia, Parkinson’s and Autism along with many who are older, living on their own and find comfort in coming together and singing, which impacts on their wellbeing.
We restarted sessions in March 2022 and have struggled to attract the number of attendees as we did previously for many reasons. Some of our older members have lost their confidence, following a long time isolating. We plan to relaunch the choir and reengage with previous members and encouraging new people to attend, as we firmly believe that everyone can benefit from singing as a group.
Research has shown that there are physiological benefits of singing, and music more generally as it exercises the brain as well as the body, but singing is particularly beneficial for improving breathing, posture and muscle tension. Listening to and participating in music has been shown to be effective in pain relief, too, due to the releasing endorphins. Our members definitely leave a lot happier than when they arrived!
If we secured funding, we would relaunch the choir and the funding would pay for the room hire to secure our sessions in 2023.
Each session can host up to 50 singers. The same people do not always attend every month and new members join. We have hosted 143 people since we started.”
