Description
In partnership with Sunniside History Society and Whickham and District u3a, Arthur Coulson (u3a) and I (SHS and u3a) researched the case of Eddie Chapman, the most notorious double agent of WW2. Eddie was born in Burnopfield 16th November 1914, he had a rather unfortunate early life – involved in petty crime and whilst on the run from the police he managed to flee to Jersey in 1939. On the German occupation of the Channel Islands he offered his services to Nazi Germany as a spy and subsequently became a British double agent double agent, he was know both as Agent ZigZag and Agent Fritz. Several books have been written about Eddie, a feature film made in 1963 starring Christopher Plummer as Eddie, and a 1 hour BBC documentary presented by Ben MacIntyre.
Our talk (ie presented by Arthur and me) runs for about 45 minutes
