Project Genesis was formed after the closure of the Consett Steel Works with one aim: to benefit the devastated local community. By developing the redundant land, the Trust has totally changed the landscape (for the better!), facilitated 200 million pounds worth of development and created hundreds of jobs for local people.

It aims to promote the conservation, protection, and enhancement of the natural, industrial, and cultural heritage of the Land of Oak & Iron while advancing public education in these areas.

Following the conclusion of the Land of Oak & Iron Partnership in 2020, a group of enthusiastic volunteers established the Land of Oak & Iron Trust as a registered charity. They continue to collaborate with schools and youth groups, research the area’s history, and produce maps, books, and educational resources.
