Summer Exhibition at Consett Heart

An exciting Summer Exhibition at Consett Heart, the community run not for profit arts and heritage venue in Consett Town Centre opens on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August from 1pm-5pm running through to Saturday September 6th (see below for opening times).  

The exhibition will feature the second annual Sheila Mackie Memorial Awards, supported by Magpie Training Ltd. and has attracted submissions from 36 different artists and for the first time will feature an under 18s section and includes the work of 6 young
creatives.

There’s over 100 individual artworks filling both floors of the centre with beauty and colour from a range of visual arts.  It’s definitely worth a visit.  You never know, you might even make a small purchase.

You are guaranteed a warm welcome and there’s always tea and coffee on the go.  You can even take your laptop and crack on with some work surrounded by art as there’s free wi-fi throughout the building.

The historic building on John Street in the town centre used to be the base for the St John’s Ambulance Brigade in the town before being taken over by the volunteers of Consett Heart (Consett and District Heritage and Arts CIC) who secured it as a community asset and moved in as tenants during the pandemic.  Since then the venue has gone from strength to strength providing Consett with a much needed cultural hub.  It has hosted theatre shows and music gigs in its upstairs theatre space and has held many exhibitions around heritage and arts. As well as one off events it has weekly arts and crafts groups, board games nights and once a month there’s a cabaret, open mic and karaoke night providing an alternative to the pub scene, all for a pay as you feel donation.

Organisations can also hire the space which helps cover the bills for this community focused social enterprise so it’s always worth checking out what’s going on.
